Skin problems can take a real toll on a pet and their owner’s well-being.  Incessant scratching, licking, scooting, and recurrent ear infections drive everyone crazy.

It is estimated that up to 40 percent of pets suffer with allergies of one kind or another, and here in the Carolina’s, that number is likely quite a bit higher.

Allergies are divided into three main types, listed below in order of occurrence.

  1. Flea allergy

  2. Atopy (inhaled and seasonal allergens like dust, pollen)

  3. Food allergy

At Mill Town Vet, we carry the newest products, prescription diets from brands like Royal Canin and Hills, and medications to treat your pet’s allergies.

Dr. McGarity can also help develop a plan for successful allergy testing and treatment, including referral to a board-certified dermatologist, and education on the proper techniques for administering and handling serum-allergy shots.

For chronic ear problems Dr. McGarity can develop a plan to get these difficult to treat infections under control once and for all.

With a combination of allergy treatments, sedated, deep ear cleanings, and culture and sensitivity testing we can effectively manage chronic otitis (ear infections).

Other skin conditions we can identify and treat in our clinic include, Demodex, Scabies, Ringworm, skin cancers, and autoimmune skin disorders like lupus and pemphigus. With our in-house laboratory and access to IDEXX send-out lab we can quickly and effectively identify the cause of your pet’s skin disease.

And if we can’t, or if treatment becomes frustrating, we will facilitate a referral to Southeast Veterinary Dermatology and Ear Clinic.

At Mill Town Vet we see these frustrating conditions as an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of both the patient and the owner.
